Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students complete sentences with the simple past tense
· Direct students to the reading. Ask“What verb tense are the reviews in?”Elicit or provide the simple past tense. Revise how to form the simple past tense with regular verbs: add d or ed to the base form of the verb. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Revise how to form negatives and questions in the simple past. Ask “What helping verb do we use to make a question in the simple past tense?”Elicit or provide did or didn't. Give students a few examples of the simple past tense in the negative and question forms. Direct students to the sentences. Say“Now complete the sentences from Exercise 2”.Monitor, offering help as needed.
· Go over the answers, having individual students read the sentences aloud.

Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Challenge students to find other past tense verbs in the reading, for example, was, didn't like, did, didn't earn, adopted, lived, died, didn't have. Point out or elicit that all the verbs are regular except for was (be) and didn't have (have).

· Direct students to the reading. Say“Find a sentence (or part of a sentence) that is affirmative". Elicit or provide This was an important game.
