Legendary stories of Bian Que
Chinese physician Bian Que is known to be the first person to rely primarily on pulse (脉搏) and physical examination for diagnoses (诊断). Many unbelievable cures and predictions were credited to Bian Que.
For example, he is said to have performed the legendary procedure known as the “exchange of hearts,” which is considered the first heart transplant (移植). Legend has it that Bian Que gave an anesthetic (麻醉剂) to two men, opened their chests, and exchanged their hearts. The procedure was said to have been a success.
Once when he was traveling through a nation called Guo, Bian Que heard that Guo’s prince had just died. He immediately went to the palace gate to seek detailed information. Based on what he heard, Bian Que claimed that he could bring the prince back to life. He had his assistant apply acupuncture to several points, and indeed, in a moment, the prince’s life was restored.
