Unit 3 Teenage problems

单元话题阅读回答问题练习

(2022春·江苏盐城·九年级校联考期中)How would you feel if your school banned(禁止) phones in class?

In February, the Ministry of Education announced that mobile phones should, in principle(原则上), be banned in primary and secondary schools. This aims to protect students’ eyesight, make sure they focus on their work and prevent them from becoming addicted(上瘾的) to the Internet and online games.

Xu Xiaohe, a 13-year-old from Zhejiang, supports the policy. “In fact, my school has never allowed us to bring our mobile phones,” Xu said. “It’s a distraction from our work. Even adults can’t control themselves, let alone kids like us.”

Li Zihan from Beijing, however, feels differently. The 13-year-old believes that a mobile phone ban is too simplistic for a generation that has grown up with mobile phones. “Students should be taught self-management skills, as well as learn how to use their phones effectively to help with their studies,” Li said. “This might be the best way to deal with technology in modern times.”

For Ge Ziqi, the problem with banning phones has more to do with life outside of school. The 13-year-old Beijinger uses a bike-sharing app every day to travel between her home and school.

“Today, phones are used everywhere, from taking a bus to buying food,” she said. “If I can’t take my phone with me, I’ll have to buy my own bicycle.”

Some schools have come up with ideas to solve problems like Ge’s. At Shanghai Shatian School, for example, students are asked to put their phones in special lockers during school hours. The students call these lockers the “phone farm” (“养机场”) or “phone tarmac” (“停机坪”).

(2021秋·江苏盐城·九年级统考期中)In July 2021, China introduced the “double reduction” policy. It hopes to reduce students’ learning burden (负担) by reducing homework and after-school classes. A few months has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy? “Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks any more. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”

According to Shen, teachers now teach at a much slower pace (节奏). Students have enough time to process new knowledge. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.”

For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development’ where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond academic (学业的) study,” said Zhang.

Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing, “Exams push me to study harder. Besides my progress, more importantly, each exam shows my weak points as well,” Zhang said.

Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind the students of your age.” he said.

During the two sessions (两会), people around the world talk about China. Have you ever wondered what issues (话题) Generation Z (“Z世代”: people born 1995-2009) are most interested in? The latest survey from TEENS might give you some clues.

The survey lists 10 categories (类别), including social issues, education and culture, with each having several sub-issues (子话题). By March 10, more than 1,300 Gen Zers have taken part in the survey, including some from overseas. Let’s take a look.

In March, TEENS did a survey on topics of the two sessions to see what interests Gen Zers the most. Among all issues, mental health of minors (未成年人) got the most votes. Promoting (弘扬) traditional culture (83%) and military talent cultivation (人才强军) (82%) followed closely.

The top choices of Chinese Generation Z are not unexpected. Take mental health as an example. Reports on mental health problems of minors have increased in recent years. The rate of depression (抑郁) among minors was nearly 25 percent, according to the Report on National Mental Health Development in China (2019-2020). In November 2021, the Ministry of Education included screening (检查) for depression in students’ regular health checks. The survey shows that teenagers themselves have realized the urgency (紧急) of the problem and want it solved, too.

Born between 1995 and 2010, Gen Zers are often hard to define (定义). People seem to know little about them. Thanks to this survey, we are able to get a glimpse (瞥见) of what Gen Zers care about and paint a picture of what they are like.

The attention they give to mental health shows that they care for their own well-being(福利). They are alert (警觉的) to how they feel. When they don’t feel well, they are brave enough to speak out and ask for help.

Although they are young, they understand the power of tradition and culture. They believe that China is deeply rooted in traditional culture, which can give them great strength and inspiration (启发).

Instead of only focusing on themselves, Gen Zers also set their eyes on a bigger picture. They care about China’s position (地位) in the world and believe that technology and talents can help make a strong army and page number 2
