The harvest season falls at different times of the year depending on region and climate, but festivals celebrating its arrival are held all over the world Some are the start of the season and the fist crops, while other are celebrations to give thanks for the blessing of a harvest.

Rice Harvest Festival (May ~ June)

The harvest festival is dedicated to Dewi Sni-the goddess of rice and fertility(丰产) celebrated by the people of Bali, Indonesia.

Mid-Autumn Festival (September ~ October)

Mooncakes and tea are served on Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as the Moon Festival, because it coincides with the full moon on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. It is also a time of family gatherings.

Yam Festival (August or September)

Men are carrying yams(山药) at the Yam Festival on the Trobriand Islands, Papua NewGuinea. The people there celebrate the end of the rainy season and the first appearance of yams.

Sukkoth (September ~ October)

Jewish people decorate the family Sukkah for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. A Sukkah is a temporary building where meals are taken for the week. The 8-day festival gives thanks to the harvest.

Pongal (January)

The 4-day festival of Pongal is a celebration of the rice harvest period. Held after the winter solstice(冬至), it celebrates the return of longer days of life-giving sunlight. Its name comes from a Tamil word, meaning “to boil”, and is also the name given to a rice dish that is prepared during this time.

The Word on the Street Festival offers work experience for volunteers who want to help us make this year’s festival a success. Here’s where we need help.

Site Set-up

8:00 am—11:00 am

You’ll be involved with:

·Installing chairs and tables in exhibitor and author tents.

·Placing and hanging signs.

·Setting up smaller rented tents.

·Helping bring out books for the display.

You’ll be given a map that’ll outline how many tables and chairs are needed in each tent as well as layouts of the tents and stages.

Information Tent

10:00 am-12:00 pm; 12:00 pm-2:30 pm; 2:30 pm-5:00 pm

It’ll be marked on the Event Guide Map you’ll receive upon arrival. You will be paired with a library staff member for these shifts. You’ll help:

·Direct festival guests and answer questions about the schedule, map, authors and so on.

·Hand out event brochures, questionnaires and scavenger hunt(寻宝) cards.

·Get festival prizes for the winners of the scavenger hunt.

Exhibitor Set-up

8:00 am—11:00 am

Your job is to guide exhibitors to their proper booths(摊位) within the marketplace tents and help them carry items to their space if needed. We also need you to direct trucks or carts while exhibitors are unloading to ensure everyone’s safety. The map you’ll receive can let you know where the exhibitor’s booth is.

Walkarounds and Crowd Counting

11:00 am—2:00 pm; 2:00 pm—5:00 pm

You’ll be counting the crowd. The day of the festival you’ll be given a map that shows the different counting zones, and a schedule of when you need to complete the counts. Other tasks include:

·Changing overflowing garbage bags.

·Encouraging festival guests to participate in upcoming author talks and workshops.

Great painter Salvador Dali once said, “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” These words perfectly describe Umapathy, an art teacher from Puducherry, who plants the seeds of creativity in his students’ minds through arts and crafts.

Umapathy makes beautiful crafts out of biodegradable (可生物降解的) materials like bamboo, dried leaves, seeds, roots, branches, vegetable waste, and so on. This way, he integrates sustainability into his creations, leaving a continuing impact on his students.

While growing up, Umapathy was inspired by his father, a government school teacher and expert weaver (编织者). “He spent most of his evenings engaging in weaving. I would observe him and eventually developed an interest in the colours, designs and the art,” recalls Umapathy.

While working at the government school, it took Umapathy some time to excite the interest of the students. He experimented with different arts and crafts using a variety of materials. “That’s when a big realization struck me. Most of the students at my school weren’t able to afford the materials or equipment to create craftwork. I decided to choose to take natural materials, which are available for free,” he says.
