When you ask for directions, answers may vary (变化) in different places. In northern China, people usually give directions with “go east” or “go west”, because most northern cities were built on plains (平原), which makes it easy to tell the directions. But Tianjin is one exception (例外). People there normally (通常) use “turn left” or “turn right”, just like the southerners do. It is because many main roads in Tianjin run along the Haihe River, which makes directions hard to tell.
When it comes to (当谈到) distance, people from the midwest of the US always use miles, while in the southwest of the States you would probably (很可能) hear “it’s just about 10 minutes’ walk”.
Nowadays, more and more people are getting used to using map apps for directions. It is much more convenient with timely updates and en-route directions (在途导航). However, sometimes you still need to ask
a real person for directions.
