Unit 3 Section Ⅲ Developing ideas & Presenting ideas-【精讲精练】2023-2024学年高中英语必修第一册外研版(课时作业)
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it.Mother sat writing letters.Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother.“But the desk, ” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry.I knew she loved me; she showed in action. But as a young girl, I wanted to have hearttoheart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us.I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”.But she lived “on the surface (表面)”.
As years passed and I had my own family.I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family.I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened.I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to Mother.I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
But the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work.I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a onepaper letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.
“In any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.”

Strangers Under the Same Roof
Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument? Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded? Do you feel that you just cannot see eye to eye with them on anything? You are not alone.Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
Teenagers' physical changes may result in such family tensions. You may feel anxious that you are not developing at the same rate as your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice, weight problems or spots(粉刺).When the worries get too much, your parents are often the first target of your anger.
It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too.You enter a strange middle ground—no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new desire for independence and a continued need for your parents' love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own.Unfortunately, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy.Sometimes they forget that growing up is a rough ride.It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.
Despite the fact that sometimes it may seem impossible to get along as a family, you can take action to improve the situation. The key to keeping the peace is regular and honest communication.Just remember that it is completely normal to struggle with the stress that parentchild tensions create, and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy period will not last.Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for adulthood.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇议论文。激烈的争吵和冷冷的沉默在青少年和他们的父母之间很常见,本文论述了如何看待青少年和父母之间的紧张关系。
5.Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?
A.To express his doubts.
B.To compare different ideas.
C.To introduce points for discussion.
D.To draw readers' attention to the topic.
随后作者提出“Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.(激烈的争吵和冰冷的沉默在青少年和他们的父母之间是常见的。)”由此可以推断出,作者提出问题是为了吸引读者对本文话题的注意力。
