Boys and girls,do you want to try a scientific test with your parents?Ask them to
stand next to you in front of a mirror. What do you see? They might say you have your
mom's hair or your dad's ears. But which parent are you most similar to?
These similarities and differences all come down to DNA-the basic part of life that
carries genes (from our parents.Genes can decide everything from our blood type
(and how tall we are to the risk of developing certain diseases. So by knowing your
parents'eye color,it is easier to know why your eyes are the color that they are.
Scientists have found that some of the DNA we have only comes from one parent. For
example, our mitochondria (have DNA that comes only from our mothers,
according to Live Science. Some studies suggest that mitochondrial DNA plays a key role
in our ability in doing sports."That is a clear example that you're more similar to your
mom than your dad, said Marika,a scientist at King's College London.
With the exception of mitochondria,it is generally agreed that we get a nearly equal
number of genes from both our mothers and our fathers-about 50%from each
one.However,which genes actually get expressed?
Gene expression refers to(指的是)which genes“switch on”as we develop.According to
one study published in Nature, genes got from male (mice get expressed more
often than genes got from female mice. However,we have yet to say for sure that this is
also true for humans. So for the moment,we can't really say why some of us look more
like our mothers or our fathers.
