Longman Welcome to English Gold 4A-Chapters 5 and 6
B.Comparison activity (Which toy snake is longer?)
Aim:
To reinforce the correct use of comparative and superlative adjectives
Description of the game:
Pupils work in pairs to compare the items on the game sheet and make sentences using the
comparative form and superlative form of some adjectives.
You will need:
1.Word cards (comparatives)
2.Enough copies of the game sheet for each pupil in the class
3.A big brown envelope for putting the word cards
Steps:
1.Fold the word cards to make them double-sided.Put them in the big brown envelope.
2.Pupils get into pairs.
3.Give each pupil a game sheet to fill in.They may write down any numbers they like in the blanks.
These will be used later for the following comparisons:
i.length (longer/shorter)
ii.height (taller/shorter)
iii.weight(heavier/lighter)
iv.dimension (bigger/smaller)
4.Draw a word card from the envelope.Show only one side of the card to the class. After that, ask the
pupils to make the comparison with their partners. For example,if the word longer'appears, pupils
should compare the length of their toy snakes on their game sheets.
5.Ask the pupils to take turns to make sentences using the adjective you have shown them on the
word card. For example, with the word 'longer'shown to the class, they should say 'name ofpupil's
toy snake is longer than my toy snake.'
6.Then turn over the word card and show the opposite adjective to the pupils,i.e.'shorter.The pupils
should then make sentences using the word 'shorter',e.g.'My toy snake is shorter than name of
pupil's toy snake.'
7.After the pair comparison, check which pupils overall have the longest toy snake/tallest robot/
heaviest doll/biggest puzzle.Ask the pupils to make sentences using the superlative form of the
adjectives,e.g.name ofpupil's toy snake is the longest.
8.Repeat Steps 4-7 with the other word cards.
