French author Jules Verne is one of the pioneers of science-fiction writing. He had a
unique method for writing his books.First,he would thoroughly research a topic and collect
many scientific facts.Verne would then take these facts and use his imagination to create
scenes, original characters, and a plot for his exciting adventure tales. This is the approach he
used to write his timeless novel Around the World in Eighty Days. But unlike many of his more
science-based fiction stories,Around the World in Eighty Days is interested in the capabilities
of technology in his own time.
Beginning in London, the story follows the adventures of two men.One ill-fated evening
at the Reform Club,Phileas Fogg bets his companions f20,000 that he can travel around
the entire globe in just eighty days-and he is determined not to lose.Breaking the
well-established routine of his daily life, the reserved Englishman immediately sets off for
Dover, accompanied by his hot-blooded French manservant Passepartout.Travelling by train,
steamship,sailing boat,sledge and even elephant,they must overcome storms,kidnappings,
natural disasters, attacks and the dogged Inspector Fix of Scotland Yard -who believes
that Fogg is a bank robber because he matches a description of the thief-to win the
extraordinary wager.
Fogg is a brilliantly drawn character,a man who is cold and precise in all his
habits. However,as the novel goes on,the icy man begins to change. He begins to place the
importance of friendship and love above his usual concerns of reserve and punctuality. In the
end,he is willing to lose his bet to help a friend.
With its vivid descriptions,Around the World in Eighty Days gripped audiences on its
publication and remains hugely popular, combining exploration and adventure.
Although travel is an important part of the novel, the book's main theme is time.Fogg is
constantly racing against the clock.Sometimes it works for him
