Asking people for things in English is a cultural thing. Don’t always say “I want ...” in a direct way if you really want something. That is because it makes us sound less polite, and people will probably want to help you less!

Period 5 Section B 3a-Self Check——回答问题
Instead, we should say “I’d like ...” to make our request. “I’d like” is short for “I would like”. So say “I’d like a sandwich” when we want to order a sandwich. In fact, when people ask us what we want politely, they often say “What would you like?” or “What can I get you?” So remember, the best words to ask for something in English I suggest should be “I’d like” and then it is even better to say “please” at the end.

Another less polite way we can ask for things is using the word “can”. For example, if we want someone to give us something that we can’t reach, we may say “Can you pass me some grapes, please?” or “Can I take ...?”. It is less polite. If we use “could”, for example, “Could you ...?” or “Could I take ...?”, we will become much
more polite.

We should also reply politely when others ask us something. So imagine someone asks you what we want for Christmas or our birthday. They could say something like “What would you like for your birthday?” We could reply with an expression like “Well, I’d love a...” or “Oh, you know, I’ve got my eye on ...”
