Objectives:
· To introduce and discuss the concept of suspense and mystery in literature.
· To develop students’ reading and comprehension skills.
· To enhance students’ understanding and usage of past continuous tense.
Materials:
· Textbook: FLTRP Edition 8th Grade English, Module 8 Unit 2.
· Short story or excerpt from a suspense or mystery novel.
· Discussion questions related to suspense and mystery in literature.
· Whiteboard or blackboard.
· Markers or chalk.
Warm-up:
1. Greet the students and initiate a class discussion by asking if they enjoy reading suspense or mystery stories and why.
2. Show images or book covers of popular suspense or mystery novels and ask students if they have read any of them.
3. Write keywords or phrases related to suspense and mystery on the board to generate interest and facilitate the transition to the main topic.
Pre-reading:
1) Introduce the concept of suspense and mystery in literature.
2) Provide examples of suspenseful and mysterious situations or plots to engage students’ interest.
3) Discuss how authors create tension and suspense in their stories through the use of descriptive language, foreshadowing, and plot twists.
While-reading:
1. Distribute the short story or excerpt from a suspense or mystery novel to the students.
2. Instruct students to read the text individually or in pairs and take notes on key information and moments of suspense or mystery.
3. Encourage students to underline or highlight any clues or hints that create suspense or mystery.
4. After completing the reading, facilitate a class discussion by asking comprehension questions and encouraging students to share their findings.
Post-reading:
1) Distribute discussion questions related to suspense and mystery in literature.
2) Divide the students into small groups or pairs, and instruct them to discuss the questions and provide their own interpretations and opinions.
