新牛津译林版高中英语选修一Unit 1 Our Living Planet
Grammar and Composition
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
______ ______ ____ ____ again
Falling from the stars
Fill in the blanks.
Here comes the rain
Song 1
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But _____ _____ ____ _____ that when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
little does she know
Song 2
1. Here comes the rain again.
2. But little does she know that when she
left that day
Inversion
Pay attention to these two lines.
predicate
subject
predicate
subject
Inversion is the changing of the subject-verb order in a sentence. When we use inversion, we put all or part of the predicate before the subject.
Usually we put the expression at the beginning of the sentence to emphasize what we're saying or to make the sentence structure more balanced.
Now let’s read more examples.
Below is an article from a science website about the changing lengths of days and years. Find the sentences that use inversion.
We sometimes change the usual subject-verb order in a statement to emphasize an idea, or to make the sentence structure more balanced.
We can use the inverted order when a sentence begins with:
an adverb like (1) _________, there or an adverbial phrase about a location;
a word with a negative meaning like never, (2) ________ and hardly;
a phrase like not only.
