We celebrate World Earth Day on April 22 each year. It’s a day to do the planet some good. Many young people do their best year-round to protect the earth. Come and see what they’ve done.
Busy bees
There is a special club in North Carolina, the US. Nine kid beekeepers there are learning about bees and how to save them. Nine-year-old Yohsiah Crews is one of them. At first, he was afraid of being stung. “But not now,” he says. His 15-year-old sister is also in the club. “Honeybees are super important,” she says, “because one bee can visit about 2,000 flowers a day, which will help pollinate (授粉) a lot of crops.”
A smart sprinkler
When Adarsh Ambati was in sixth grade, he noticed something strange. The frogs in the small river near his house stopped croaking (呱呱叫), and green grass was turning brown. He realized his hometown was going through a drought. So his family spared no effort to save water. But some of his neighbors always forgot to turn off their sprinklers. This inspired Adarsh to create a smart sprinkler system. It senses moisture (水分) levels in soil. It uses real-time weather information to decide when sprinklers should be turned on. With its help, plenty of water has been saved.
Ride on!
Nora Ball was nearly hit by a car at the crossroad in front of her school. Three years earlier, a student lost her life at the same place. For this, Nora decided to do something. She teamed up with Bria Brown in her class to set up a group to protect walkers. One of the group’s goals is to help communities by making bike travel easier. “Biking can help decrease greenhouse gases. Plus, it’s a good way to exercise and to enjoy the beauty of the earth, too!” says 17-year-old Nora.
