Also known as “fireworks night”, it􀆳s a British celebration with a deep history. The celebration traces its origins back to Nov. 5, 1605, when a small group of people who disliked the English King James Ⅰ decided to blow up parliament (议会) while he was attending. As an expert on explosives, Guy Fawkes filled barrels (桶) with gunpowder, which would be secretly placed under parliament, in preparation for the king􀆳s arrival. However, their plan was found out and the king was saved. After the failure of the plot, bonfires were lit around the country in celebration. This tradition has continued every year since.
