The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games got a big success. On October 18, 2021, the Olympic flame (奥运圣火) for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games was started in Olympia (奥林匹亚) , Greece. Later, a few people took turns to carry the torch (火炬) ’first to Athens, and then to Beijing on October 20 by plane. It was called the torch relay (接力) . A car followed the torch relay at all times. Inside was a lamp (灯) with a back-up flame. If the torch went out, runners could use the lamp to light the torch again.
So how much do you know about the Olympic flame?
It comes from an old Greek story. In the story, Prometheus (普罗米修斯) got fire from the god and gave it to humans. So, humans see fire as a symbol of light and freedom.
________?
People don’t use a match to light the torch. They use a special mirror (镜子) and the sun’s light. If it is a cloudy or rainy day, people usually hold a rehearsal (彩排) a few days before. They keep the flame in a safety lamp for the poor weather.
Can the flame go underwater?
In the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the flame went underwater. The torch burnt (燃烧) at 2, 000 degrees. The high temperature stopped water from putting out the flame.
