A game good for no one
美对华禁令损害全球芯片业
Over the last few years, the US has put a number of sanctions (制裁) on China and
tried to set back its tech development, especially in the semiconductor industry.
Brought out on Aug 9, 2022, by US President Joe Biden, the US’s Chips and Science
Act offers $52.7 billion (about 367 billion yuan) for US semiconductor production (制
造) and research. That ’s a big boost (促进) for US companies. But it comes at a big
cost. Companies will be supported to develop chips in the US but will not be allowed
to work with China for the next 10 years, reported China Daily.
China has strongly opposed (反对 ) the new US act and called it “ unfair ” . The
government said that using political (政治的) power to intervene (干预) in an area
that is highly globalized will harm ( 危 害 ) the interests of companies globally,
including those in the US.
According to the Boston Consulting Group, US companies could lose 18 percentage
points of global share and 37 percent of their revenues (收入 ) over the same time
period if the US bans (禁止) semiconductor companies from selling to China.
On Aug 10, 2022, Foreign Ministry spokesman (外交部发言人) Wang Wenbin said at
a news conference, that the Act is an example of economic coercion (经济胁迫) by
the US. Restrictions (限制) and suppression (打压) will not stop the pace of China’s
technological and industrial development, he said.
