吴易昺创中国男网历史
Wu Yibing made tennis history on Feb 12, when he became the first Chinese men’s
player to win an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP, 职业网球联合会) Tour
event at the Dallas Open in Texas, US.
The 23-year-old Wu beat US favorite John Isner in the final (决赛 ). Seen as an
underdog (劣势者), Wu kept his cool facing the 2.08-meter-tall powerful player. His
power, agility (敏捷 ) and accuracy (准确 ) helped him win after three hours of
fighting. “On this court ( 球 场 ), it’s hard to hit him (Wu) with a shot he is
uncomfortable with … He is an unbelievable ball striker (击球者) and a very good
talent,” said Isner.
The win helped Wu climb to No 58, his highest in the ATP men’s world rankings (排
名). He has come a long way to achieve this.
Brought to a tennis court for the first time at just 5, Wu was encouraged by his parents
to exercise to lose weight. His provincial (省内的) junior team soon saw his talent,
starting a journey that would change the face of men’s tennis in China.
Developed overseas (在海外), Wu shot to fame in 2017 after winning the US Open
boys’ tournament (锦标赛) at 18. However, after becoming the first Chinese to win a
major junior title, Wu was troubled by injuries (伤病 ) to his elbow, lower back,
shoulder and wrist (手腕). This forced the young star to miss almost three years from
the ATP Tour until last spring. Within one year, Wu made an amazing comeback,
raising his ranking from No 1,869 to No 58. “Looking back, I feel like I wouldn’t
have been here if not for the ups and downs over the past few years. I take all the
setbacks (挫折) and struggles (挣扎) as an asset (财富) that helps me mature mentally
(心理成熟) now,” said Wu.
