During his 12-hour shift at the U.S. Capitol, he took advantage of some downtime to teach his students how to play Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" while sitting in the back of a Humvee. Kohut, who has been in the military for 11 years as part of the 257th Army Band, also teaches music at two schools in Fairfax County, Virginia. When he was first called up for duty, he worried about his students and their education. Despite assurances from school officials that someone else could cover his classes, he insisted on continuing to teach remotely. He started each day by teaching his elementary class remotely from the drill floor of the DC Armory before beginning his Guard shift at 10 a.m. Later in the day, he taught his middle school students online during his break while sitting in the back of a Humvee. According to his principal at Canterbury Woods Elementary, Diane Leipzig, Kohut takes pride in his work and is committed to his students' success. He provides an excellent example by teaching kids the importance of practice, determination, and resilience. Parents were touched by his dedication to his students, with one writing an email to express her admiration for him. Kohut says he is simply doing what needs to be done and that soldiers must be prepared to do anything, such as standing outside for 18 hours straight in freezing weather conditions. Nevertheless, his music classes provide a source of comfort amid the long and stressful hours of standing guard. As all eleven instruments played together in perfect sync, producing the familiar melody of "Ode to Joy," Kohut recognized the song's significance.
