The plan encourages interdisciplinary integration (跨学科融合), which means combining different subjects. For example, medicine is encouraged to be combined with liberal arts (文科), sciences, or engineering (工科), while agriculture (农学) will be mixed with biology (生物学), information technology, and engineering. In general, China plans to adjust about 20 percent of college majors (专业) by 2025.  One example of interdisciplinary integration is the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS, 交叉信息研究院) at Tsinghua University. “IIIS does its research by combining computer science with artificial intelligence (AI) and finance (金融),” Lu Jinfan, 18, who studies at IIIS, said. As the base of AI development, computer science helps AI to better understand and deal with complex data (复杂的数据). The integration of these two fields will push AI to go further, said Lu.  The ministry started to encourage the development of interdisciplinary subjects in 2017. By the end of 2020, there were 549 interdisciplinary subjects at 160 universities in China. Some universities have also changed their class arrangement (安排) to integrate subjects and develop all-around talents. For example, Shanghai Jiaotong University has a program where students study sciences and engineering for four years, and then medicine for four years. In this way, students learn about medicine as well as other subjects like AI, big data, and robotics.
