Math, physics, chemistry ... these subjects might often get you frustrated as they’re not easy to learn. However, they are very important. Basic research focuses on these subjects and more.
China announced plans on March 10 to reorganize (重组) the Ministry of Science and Technology, making it better support basic sciences. After the plan is carried out, the ministry will take on key duties such as managing the nation’s basic research, State laboratories and big scientific projects.
This is in line with China’s greater emphasis (重视) on basic research in recent years. China has doubled its spending on basic research over the past five years, according to this year’s Government Work Report.
Basic research provides the base for developing new technologies, products and services that benefit economic development and people’s lives. For example, progress in physics has led to many technological innovations, including lasers and GPS systems.
“Without breakthroughs in basic sciences, there won’t be applications (应用),” Shen Renfang, the director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Soil Science, told China Daily.
However, China is facing key bottleneck (瓶颈) challenges in fields such as the integrated circuit (集成电路) and artificial intelligence. That’s because it lacks (缺乏) some basic research needed to solve key scientific problems.
In the future, the ministry will make use of resources (资源) across the country and focus on solving key bottleneck problems. This will help China move faster toward greater self-reliance (自立) in science and technology.
