What do you know about Vincent van Gogh?
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), a Dutch painter who went to live in southern France and helped to develop the
style of Post-Impressionism. His paintings
typically use bright colours and have thick lines
of paints in circular patterns, and the most
famous ones include Sunflowers and Irises.
Although he was poor during his life, his paintings are now extremely valuable and are sold at very high prices.
Read the museum introduction to the painting and answer the questions.
1. What else do you know about Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings?
Sunflowers is the title of two series of still life oil paintings by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The earlier series were executed in Paris in 1887, depicts the sunflower lying on the ground; while the second set, made in 1889 in Arles, shows a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase.
In Vincent’s mind both sets of sunflower paintings were linked by the name of artist Paul Gauguin, who acquired two of the Paris versions.
2. What do you think of this one?
I like the Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh, an abstract painting. Because abstract art defies rules and conventions. It’s up to you as the artist to break rules, be expressive, and decide what is art.
Complete the boxes with the information in Activity 5. Do further research if necessary.
