I had just given a speech and was waiting for the results. A silence fell across the room. The contest (比赛) organizer read the third-place winner. The name was not mine. Then he read the second-place winner, and once again it was not me. At last, the moment of truth came. I finished fourth of the four competitors.
Losing is a part of life, and I have experienced it more than once. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who hurt his foot. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh.” I could understand that.
I had spent many hours in libraries researching on Lincoln. As I read several books about him, one idea stood out: Lincoln met with many failures, but he never allowed them to stand in the way of his success. I thought “failing successfully” was a very proper topic, considering the many failures Lincoln experienced. So this became the title of my speech.
After not winning the speech contest in the first year, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had been the perfect example of persistence (坚持不懈), so I was not going to give up on a contest on a historic people who did not give up. I continued practicing my topic.
This time I did not come last. But I couldn’t accept the fact that I didn’t win anything that I had worked so hard on, until I thought carefully about the man. Never mind the lost prize money and praise — I had learned, really learned, about a great man who had experienced failures, and had many chances to give up but never did. Now, whenever I face difficulties, I remember Abraham Lincoln.
