Environmental
destruction
may
make
pandemics(流行病)
more
likely
and
less
manageable,
a
new
study
suggests.
The
study,
by
the
University
of
the
West
of
England
and
the
Greenpeace
Research
Laboratories
at
the
University
of
Exeter,
presents
the
idea
that
disease
risks
are
linked
with
biodiversity
and
natural
processes
such
as
the
water
cycle.
Using
a
framework
designed
to
analyze
complex
relationships
between
society
and
the
environment,
the
study
concludes
that
maintaining
complete
and
fully
functioning
ecosystems
and
their
associated
environmental
and
health
benefits
is
key
to
preventing
the
appearing
of
new
pandemics.
The
loss
of
these
benefits
through
ecosystem
degradation(恶化)—including
destroying
forests,
changing
land
use
and
intensive
farming—worsens
the
problem
by
polluting
water
and
other
resources
vital
for
reducing
disease
spread.
Lead
author
Dr
Mark
Everard,
of
the
University
of
the
West
of
England,
said,
“Disease
risks
cannot
be
separated
from
ecosystem
conservation
and
natural
resource
security.
Ecosystems
naturally
restrain
the
transfer
of
diseases
from
animals
to
humans,
but
this
service
declines
as
ecosystems
become
unbalanced.
At
the
same
time,
ecosystem
degradation
harms
water
security,
limiting
availability
of
adequate
water
for
good
personal
hygiene(卫生)
and
disease
treatment. ”
Dr
David
Santillo,
of
the
Greenpeace
Research
Laboratories
at
Exeter,
added,
“The
