recentstudywasthefirsttoprovethatrisingtemperaturesandmovingtoavoidthemcanleadto
extinction.
In2016,Fitzpatrick,directorandacoGwriterofthestudypassedhisnotes,photosandother
recordstoBenjaminFreeman.Freemanhasbeenresearchingtropicalbirdsformorethan10years.
HesetoutinAugustandSeptemberof2017tocopyFitzpatricksstudy.Histeamusedthesame
methods,searchingthesameplacesinthesametimeofyear.
Freemansteam wantedtoseehowthingshadchangedforthebirdgroupssince1985.The
averagetemperaturesonthemountainhadrisen042degreesCelsius.Histeamplaced20sound
recordingdevicesonthemountaintorecordthesoundsofbirdsthatmightnoteasilybeseen.
Freemansaidthatthebirdsmovedanaverageof98metresfurtherupthemountain.Hebelieves
thattemperatureisthemaincauseofthebirdsmovement.Fitzpatricknotedthatbirdsusedtoliving
inareaswithlittletemperaturechangemaybeespecialyatriskbecauseofclimatechange.Hesaid,
“Weshouldexpectthatwhatshappeningonthismountaintopishappeningmoregeneralyinthe
