Unit 2
Discovering useful Structures
Learning objective:
1. To talk about the future plans
2. To learn to use the Present Continuous Tense for future plans
3. To create proper situations to use Present Continuous Tense(PCT) for future
Step 1
By far, we’ve got to know several grammatical Tenses, such as Simple Present, Simple Past and Present Continuous. Read the following sentences to review the usage of PCT
1. I am having an English class now.
2. When he is watching TV, his mother is preparing food.
3. -What is he doing?
-He is listening to music.
In these sentences, the PCT tells us what is happening right now and it’s an on-going action that hasn’t come to an end. Now please look at the following sentences. Do you think the PCT in these sentences still share the same meaning with the former ones?
1. I’m travelling around Europe for two weeks with my aunt and uncle.
2. We’re renting a car and driving.
3. My parents are taking me to Hong Kong during the October holiday.
I’d like to offer you some hints. Actually, some of the sentences are chosen from the conversation between Paul and Meilin. Do you still remember the main idea of their conversation? Yes, it discusses future plans. Likewise, the PCT in these sentences are no longer referring to an ongoing action. Instead, it talks about the plans in the future.
In general, the PCT has two usages. Firstly, it shows an ongoing action. Secondly, it shows a future plan.
Step 2
To have a better understanding of the second usage, let’s read the conversation in task 2 (p.28). Please underline the Present Continuous Tense which shows a future plan.
Amy: Hello, Jeremy! What are you doing this weekend?
Jeremy: Hi, Amy! Some friends and I are going to that new water park on Saturday. Do you want to join us?
Amy: Sure, I’d love to! What time and where?
Jeremy: We’re meeting at 10:00 am at the bus stop near our school.
Amy: How about lunch? Are you eating there at the water park?
Jeremy: Well, I’m bringing my own lunch. I th
