英语(译林版)八年级上 Unit 1 Friends 学霸新视野——外刊阅读 Making a pen name for yourself Who gave himself the names Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass, and Josh? These “pen names” were used by the 19th-century American author Mark Twain. A pen name is a made-up name that writers sometimes use to hide their identities(身份). But did you know that even “Mark Twain” is a pen name? Samuel Langhorne Clemens began signing his name as Mark Twain when he was a newspaper reporter. Clemens had been a pilot on the Mississippi River. The depth(深度) of this river was measured(测量) frequently to make sure it was deep enough for the boat. A rope that was marked to show fathoms(英寻,测量水深单位) was lowered from the boat into the water. The call “mark twain!” meant that two fathoms had been measured. Mark Twain was the author of the novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as many other works. George Eliot was another author of the same period. Eliot grew up in the English countryside and later moved to London to work as a writer. Novels by Eliot, such as Silas Marner and Middlemarch, were acclaimed(称赞) for their realistic view(看法) of English life. But George Eliot was actually a woman named Mary Ann Evans. She chose a man’s name as her pen name because women writers during that time were sometimes not respected. The topsy-turvy(颠倒的) world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass were created by the author Lewis Carroll. But Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematician at the University of Oxford in England. His pen name is a topsy-turvy version(版本) of his real name. He reversed(反转) Charles Lutwidge, translated this into Latin as Ludovicus Carolus, and then turned that into English as Lewis Carroll. How would you create your pen name? Tips: A fathom is equal to six feet. Twain is an old-fashioned word for “two”. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 1. What is a pen name? A made-up name (that writers sometimes use to hide their identities
