Eliot grew up in the English countryside and later moved to London to work as a writer. Novels by Eliot, such as Silas Marner and Middlemarch, were acclaimed(称赞) for their realistic views(看法) about English life. But George Eliot was actually a woman named Mary Ann Evans. She chose a man's name for her pen name because women writers during that time sometimes were not respected(尊重). 　　The topsy-turvy(颠倒的) world of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass was created by author Lewis Carroll. But Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a scholar(学者) of mathematics and logic(逻辑学) at the University of Oxford in England.
