Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, widely known for developing the first hybrid rice strain(杂交水稻品种), died of illness on Saturday, May 22, 2021.

The top rice scientist in China passed away in a hospital in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, at about 1 p.m., according to the news report.

Having spent over fifty years in hybrid rice research, Yuan Longping has helped China work a great wonder—feeding nearly one-fifth of the world’s population with less than 9 percent of the world’s total land.

Born in Beijing in 1930, Yuan succeeded in growing the world’s first hybrid rice strain in 1973. It was later grown on a large scale in China and other countries to greatly increase production, and it pulled countless people out of hunger.

For the next forty years, he continued to research and upgrade hybrid rice, which has reached its third generation. Until early this year, he had been doing research in Hainan.

Yuan once said he had two dreams—to “enjoy the cool under the rice crops taller than men” and that hybrid rice could be grown all over the world to help solve the global food shortage.

On China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo, the news has been viewed 950 million times so far, with netizens(网友) expressing sadness at the death of a great man.

The machine is called GENNY, it is small enough to be used in a home or office but can produce up to 30 liters of water a day. More importantly, it can produce clean water out of air.

GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter (过滤器) to clean away dirty things. The filter is powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air then passes through a room, then vapour in the air turns into water by heating and cooling in the room. The water is then passed through some
