In schools,however, accidents often happen，so there must be people at school who know how to do first aid. First aid is help that you give to someone who has suddenly fallen ill or who has had an accident. You don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse. Anyone can be a first aider(that’s someone who knows first aid), but in most schools,the only first aiders are teachers. There are a lot more children than teachers in any school, so why not teach the children first aid? That’s exactly what we’ve done in my own school. The school’s team of first aiders now has 32 members, some as young as 11, who know what to do when someone is in danger. Every year, nurses from a local hospital teach our children the necessary skills to save lives. Children are taught what to do, for example, if a friend of theirs has a headache. They also know what to do if someone is in real danger. Recently, two students from my school were able to use their new skills. 13-year-old Mike and his friend Joe were playing together when Joe got a piece of apple in his throat that wouldn’t move. Although his friend was in great danger. Mike was not frightened. With one move, he took the apple out and saved Joe’s life. 11-year-old Kim’s story is even more amazing. Her mum suffers from a heart problem. One evening, her mum suddenly fell to the ground. Kim knew exactly what to do. She called an ambulance(救护车）and took care of her mum until help arrived.
