All animals need sleep. Some sleep a little. Others sleep a lot. Some sleep in surprising ways. Keep reading to learn more about how animals get their zzzz’s.
Some animals are light sleepers. Giraffes sleep for just a few hours each day. For giraffes, it is not safe to sleep much more than that. Giraffes have long, thin legs. When they lie down, it is hard to get back up. So giraffes mostly take short naps. They sleep standing up. Horses sleep standing up, too. Like giraffes, they need to be ready to run away. Horses do need to lie down for some of their sleep, though. Giraffes do, too. The animals get about 20 or 30 minutes of deep sleep while lying down.
Some animals are big sleepers. Koalas live in Australia. These animals eat only one food: leaves. Leaves do not give them much energy. So koalas sleep most of the time. They sleep for about 20 hours in total. Lions sleep a lot, too. They can feel safe while sleeping. After all, they are predators, which hunt other animals. Who would bother (打扰) a sleeping lion?
Dolphins are always swimming in the sea. So how do they sleep? If they stop swimming, will they drown (淹死)? Dolphins have a great trick for this. They sleep with half of their brains at a time, the other half stays awake. The sides switch (转换) after 20 minutes. Some birds sleep this way, too. They use half of their brains to fly, the other half goes to sleep. After the birds land, they sleep much more.
