It is different from recycling. When you recycle something, old materials need to be broken down so that their base materials can be remade into a new product, often of inferior quality. When you upcycle an object, you aren’t breaking down the material. You’re simply making it into something else. Also, the upcycled object is typically of the same, or even better quality. The idea of upcycling isn’t new. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the 1930s to 1940s when people didn’t have many material resources. In those days, people found new purposes for old things over and over until they were no longer useful. For example, old coats would be turned into shoes and an old door would be made into a new table. Nowadays, economising is still a big reason why some people upcycle. An even bigger reason for the rebirth of upcycling is that it’s environmentally-friendly. Things shouldn’t just be thrown away when they can be turned into something useful. Upcycling is also more environmentally-friendly than recycling which requires energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling just requires your own creativity and effort.
