The reading text is a script ( [skrɪpt] (戏剧、电影)剧本;(电视节目)广播稿 ) of a television debate about environmental issues. A spokeswoman from the Green Society and a business development consultant are invited to a live programme and asked to express their attitudes towards the relationship between the environment and the economy.
We are expected to understand the two experts’ opinions, reinforce [ˌri:ɪnˈfɔ:s] our reading comprehension skills and improve our overall ([ˌəʊvərˈɔ:l]全面的;综合的;总体的) ability. The Reading strategy in this unit teaches us students how to read a debate. We are expected to apply the skills learnt to practical use.

In a debate, one side gets the chance to present their points first. The other side follows and presents theirs. In an actual debate, there is often a discussion after both sides have presented their views.
