A mother was angry with her daughter’sschoolafter the youngster was sent home because hertrouserswere believed tootightby teachers.Teachersat Barnsley Academy,South Yorkshire,have been lining up pupils and measuring their trouser width with a ruler if they don’t look appropriate.
The school introduced a strict uniform policy just after Christmas and it has made some parents and pupils angry.On its website Barnsley Academy states trousers must be at least 10cm wide and says smart,tailored,plain,black school trousers of waist height to ankle length are to be worn.A spokesperson for the school,said: “The academy has a strict uniform policy which parents and students are fully aware of and which is being properly carried out.All students are expected to adhere to the policy.Ouruniform_policy here at Cardinal Newman Catholic School is well established and we are simply reminding students of the policy as they come back to start a new term.”
Jane Ogden,36,the mother of Ellie,14 and Mollie Young,12,who bothstudyin the school,is one of the parents less thanimpressedwith the rule.Her daughter Ellie was_stoppedfrom going to school between Monday and Wednesday last week for her trousers being too tight,even though,she claims,they were 13cm wide. Ellie was not alone when she was given suchorders—19 other girls were also being sent home on the same day.
Mrs Ogden,who spent £72 on trousers for her seven children at the start of the year,said teachers were going too far.She said:“The school said that it was a changing problem and that they needed to show the children how to be respectful.I pride myself in my children giving me respect but I think we should respect them as well.” The school has thought these trousers suitable.Mrs Ogden,said:“Ellie is in year 10,so it’s an important GCSE(普通中等教育证书) year in hereducationand now she has to catch up with work.”
