Order Food in English
Li Hua, from China, is in high school in London, UK, and he lives in his aunt’s house. As a new student, he plans to eat out with five of his classmates tomorrow. Listen! His aunt is telling him how to order food in English:
“You can book a table on the phone by saying, ‘I’d like a table for six, please.’ This will let the waiter know how many people to expect. And the waiter may ask if you’d like to sit indoors or outdoors. Make it clear where you want to sit for a meal.
“When you are in the restaurant and sit at table, the waiter will ask, ‘Are you ready to order?’ or ‘Can I take your order? ’If you’re ready, you can give your order using ‘I’d like ...’ or ‘I’ll have ...’ If you’re not sure what to order, ask the waiter, ‘What would you recommend? ’ to get some advice.
“OK, time to pay the bill. You can ask the waiter, ‘Can we have the bill, please?’ or ‘Check, please.’ to see how much you need to pay. Also, give the waiter a tip for his service, usually 10-15% of the bill. It’s common in an English-speaking country.”
“Oh, it’s so easy. I’ll keep these tips in mind. Thank you, aunt,” Li Hua says.
