Mountains are the risen Earth’s surface. The mountains are usually higher than six hundred meters and are
taller and steeper compared to hills.
The tallest mountain on the earth is Mount Everest, while the largest mountain range is actually located
within the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Do you want to know where some of the highest mountains peaks
are located? 1 Mountains are actually prepared from Earth’s deep layers of rocky material. The outer layer
of the Earth is made up of six plates. Whenever the plates collides ( 碰撞 ) with each other, the collision results in
the lifting of major areas of land and transforms them into mountains.
There are three main types of mountains: volcanic, fold, and block. 2 These are often seen in the Himalayan
ranges in Asia and in the Alps in Europe. These are formed as the result of collision of two plates of the Earth. 3
When the blocks of the rock materials slide along the faults ( 断层 ) of the Earth they give rise to Fault-Block
Mountains. 4 These are the lifted and the tilted ( 倾斜 ). The lifted type has both the sides as steep, whereas
the tilted type has one side that is steep, while the other side is tilted. The Sierra Nevada Mountain of North
America is a good example of this type of mountain. Mountain that arises out of volcanic eruptions is named
as Volcanic Mountains. 5 It is formed by the magma ( 岩 浆 ) that reaches the surface because of volcanic
eruptions.
A. There are two types of Block Mountains.
B. The best example is Mount Fuji of Japan.
C. The answer to this is surely in the oceans.
D. Fold Mountains are the most common type.
E. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth.
F. The other two types are not formed from plate collisions.
G. Heights of mountains are typically measured above sea level.
