Yesterday, I was sitting by the window of my house near the sea. I saw different groups of 41 stop to take photos. They most likely to share them on Wechat and QQ.
The members of the group usually stood with their backs to the bay with big smiles on their faces as if to say, “Look at us: we are here, and you are not.” I was 42 to see only a few actually seemed to be “present”. Most seemed satisfied with their photos and get back on the road. However, I saw some people different from them. Four or five young couples, arrived throughout the day and, after taking the 43 selfie (自拍), spent quite a lot of time gazing (凝视), not at the view, but into each other’s eyes. I had no problem with that.
A boy attracted me who looked about 7. He stood alone on a rock 44 his arms stretched wide and looked out at the ocean, possibly 45 all his wildest dreams coming true.
A woman, maybe his mother, made him 46 her for a photo. Then, he went back to rock 47 it was time to leave. Whatever he saw, he probably won’t need a photo to remember it. Most of us spend a lot of time looking at electronic screens, seeing the world on tiny displays. These small screens help us stay a close relationship with the people we love, but they can also make us 48 some important things.
The screens themselves aren’t really the problem, 49 how we use them – or allow them to “use” us. I’m not saying we should give these screens up 50 – how else would we keep in touch?
But sometimes, it’s such a pleasure to set them aside and stand like a child by the ocean, with eyes, arms and heart wide open.
Indeed, there’s a name for that kind of pleasure – it’s called being alive.
