A big handful of potato chips may make you happy. But do you know that potato chips were just invented by accident? The story happened in 1853 when George Crum was working as a chef (厨师) in Cary Moon, a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York, USA. One hot summer day, a customer came into the restaurant and ordered the restaurant’s well-known Moon’s Fried Potatoes. These thick-cut French fries were eaten with a fork. Crum prepared the potatoes and served them as he would normally do, but the customer complained (抱怨) that they were too thick. Crum created another batch (一批), thinner this time, but the customer again complained that the thickness wasn’t to his liking. The third time, Crum, who started to get angry with the customer, did his best to cut the potatoes paper-thin so that they couldn’t be eaten with a fork. He deep fried them so long that they became hard and crispy, and then salted them heavily. The idea was to make the potatoes taste awful. But, to his surprise, when he served them, the customer was pleased! The fries became known as the “Saratoga Chip” and the potato chips were born!
