In order to protect the goods against possible risks and perils, the buyer or seller usually apply to an insurance company for insurance covering the goods in transit. Learning Objectives 1. Chapter 8 Insurance 4 8.1 Introduction Chapter 8 Insurance In international trade, the goods may encounter various kinds of perils and may suffer losses during the transportation from the seller to the buyer over a long distance by air, land or sea, or the procedures of loading, unloading and storing. In order to protect the goods against possible risks and perils, the buyer or seller usually apply to an insurance company for insurance covering the goods in transit. The party who is insured against possible loss or damage is called the insured. The contract made between the insurer and the insured is called the insurance policy or insurance certificate. The amount of money the insurer agrees to cover is the insured amount. The money the insured agrees to pay the insurer for an insurance policy is premium. 8.1.3 Effecting Insurance and Insurance Claims Chapter 8 Insurance 8 An insurance claim should be submitted to the insurance company or its agent promptly if any risk or peril is incurred.
